Because People Change Everything

I’m Ed Shanley. I use stories, humor, practical tools, and honest conversation to help leaders better understand themselves, the people around them, and the messy human moments no title prepares them for.

People Are Complicated.  And That's What Makes Them Interesting

I’ve spent decades trying to understand why we do what we do - why we connect, why we misunderstand one another, why we sometimes make things harder than they need to be, and why the people around us matter far more than we sometimes realize.

How I Got Here

For a long time, my life looked pretty good on paper.

I had built the life I thought I was supposed to want -marriage, family, church, career... all the things that were supposed to add up to a good life.

But something was off.

Deep down, I knew my life didn't fit.

In 2013, after years of trying to be someone I wasn't, I finally said the words I had spent decades avoiding:

I'm gay.

And saying those two words changed everything.

I lost relationships, community, and much of the life I had built. At 43, I found myself starting over.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I had to.

I learned a lot during those years.

I learned that people are far more complicated than what we can see from the outside.

I learned how easily we make assumptions about someone's life without knowing what's actually happening underneath.

I learned how much courage it can take to let people see who we really are.

And perhaps most importantly, I learned just how much we need each other.

I didn't rebuild my life alone.

Friends. Teachers. Mentors. Coworkers. Family. Sometimes even people I barely knew helped me take the next step.

Some probably never knew how much they helped.

All of it changed the way I understand people.

And that eventually changed the work I wanted to do.

What I Bring to the Table

My story shaped the way I understand people.

But it's only part of what I bring to the room.

I've spent more than 30 years working in leadership, technology, and business environments - and years studying how people think, communicate, connect, and change.

My background includes:

  • 30+ years in leadership, technology, and business environments as a Scrum Master, Project Manager, and Business Analyst

  • MBA in Business Psychology

  • Certified Life Coach

  • Certified Practitioner of Human Interaction Technology

  • Advanced study in emotional intelligence, communication, mindset, NLP, trauma, and behavior change

  • Years of experience leading teams, facilitating workshops, and navigating the real-world people problems that don't come with an instruction manual

But here's the part that matters to me:

I don't separate what I've studied from what I've lived.

I bring both into the room.

The research and the real life.

The theory and the experience.

The leadership models and the messy humans who don't always fit inside them.

That's where things get interesting.

Probably the most formal you’ll ever see me.

Let’s Connect

I talk about some pretty meaningful stuff.

Leadership. Emotions. Communication. Identity. Connection. The people who shape our lives - and the ways we shape theirs.

But meaningful doesn't have to mean serious all the damn time.

I believe we can talk about things that matter and still laugh.

We can challenge the way we see ourselves and other people without turning it into a three-hour therapy session.

And we can walk away thinking a little differently than we did when we walked in.

That's the kind of experience I create.

So whether you're looking for a keynote that gets people talking or a workshop that gets them involved, I'd love to hear about the people you're bringing together.

Let's give them something worth remembering.
